So you’ve decided to give the Curly Girl Method a try. That’s wonderful! This approach can completely change how your curls look and feel, but starting off can be confusing if you’re not sure where to begin. Don’t worry. I’ll guide you through the first steps so your transition is smooth and your results come faster.

💧 Step 1: Clarify & Reset

Before you dive into your new routine, you’ll want to remove any buildup from products with silicones, waxes, or heavy oils. Use a clarifying shampoo one last time to give your hair a clean slate; then say goodbye to sulfates for good.

This “reset wash” helps your hair start fresh so it can fully absorb the moisture and nutrients from CG-approved products.

🌿 Step 2: Choose the Right Cleanser

In the Curly Girl Method, traditional shampoo gets replaced by one of two options:

  • Co-wash: A cleansing conditioner that gently cleans without stripping natural oils.

  • Low-poo: A mild, sulfate-free shampoo designed for curly hair.

If your scalp tends to get oily, go for a low-poo. If it’s on the dry side, a co-wash might be your best friend.

🌸 Step 3: Condition — Generously!

Conditioner is the heart of the method. Use plenty, and work it through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb while it’s still slippery. Then, rinse lightly or not at all, depending on your curl type and preference — this helps lock in moisture and keep your curls soft.

🌤 Step 4: Style with Purpose

While your hair is still soaking wet:

  1. Apply a curl cream, gel, or mousse that’s silicone-free.

  2. Scrunch your curls upward toward your scalp.

  3. Try “plopping” — wrapping your hair in a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel to encourage curl formation as it dries.

You’ll quickly notice more bounce and definition!

🌼 Step 5: Be Patient with the Process

Your hair may take a few weeks to adjust, especially if it’s been used to sulfates and heat styling. Be patient! As your natural texture comes back, your curls will look healthier, shinier, and more defined with every wash.

At Sophisticuts Salon, I love helping clients figure out what products and techniques work best for their unique curls. Your hair’s potential is already there — it just needs the right care to show off its natural beauty.
