What is Co-Washing?

Co-washing is simply cleansing your hair with conditioner, yes conditioner, instead of using shampoo.

I know this sounds crazy. It sounds gross and nasty. BUT... I promise you, it's not! I know this because I have been co-washing my hair for over a year and a half, and I work with clients who have been co-washing their hair for years. My hair is cleaner now than when I used shampoo.

I will admit that several years ago, I tried co-washing, before I had enough information to know the proper way to do it, and I was less than satisfied. It didn't take me but a few days to grab the shampoo bottle. After some research, and some trial and error of my own, I am happy with my current co-wash routine.

All of my life, I had to shampoo my hair daily. It was a chore, because that also meant it had to be dried and styled every day. My scalp was oily and my hair was dry. My ends were frizzy, and it felt like straw. It tangled and would be stuck to my head halfway through the day.

Co-Washing changed all of that. I now wash my hair usually twice a week (although I could probably get away with once a week), my scalp isn't oily, my ends aren't as dry and frizzy and it feels so soft and healthy. Oh yeah, my natural curls are springing up and forming prettier curls too.

Occasionally, I get a wild hair and think I need to use shampoo. This decision always ends in regret. I wish someone would stop me when I have those moments. The results of shampoo on my hair at this point are always the same... limp, lifeless curls, frizz, straight pieces that won't curl, dry scalp that gets oily way too quick.

Now that you know what Co-washing means, keep an open mind, and find out if it's right for you. Be sure to research the proper way to co-wash before getting started, and enjoy the rewards.
